Who doesn’t dream of traveling as a couple? Hand in hand…feet in the sand of a desert island, on the canals of Venice, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, on the footpaths of Machu Picchu, or in the jungle of Madagascar. There’s no lack of ideas!
The height of romance, right?
Yes…but not always. A long trip can really put a young couple’s relationship to the test. Nonetheless, I highly recommend it as a way of determining if you’re ready to embark on a journey that can potentially last a lifetime.
There will be moments of beauty and pure ecstasy when you’re surrounded by the magnificence of nature and in those moments you’ll consider yourselves the luckiest people in the world to be able to experience them together. And you’ll be right! But there will also be times when you’re sick, when you’re not at your best, when the roadside is the nearest restroom, when you’ll be exhausted by the trip in general, when you’ll both be touchy and oversensitive, moments when you’ll need solitude… All in all, a long trip spent together as a couple can serve as a peak into your future together.
Traveling is a great way to reenergize yourself. It provides a break from routine and the stress of everyday life. The need to be productive is put on hold. You step out of your comfort zone. And you learn to simply be. Just be. That’s when you can really get in touch with yourself and figure out what you want out of life and the person you truly want to be. Not that you’ve forgotten. It’s just that sometimes we put ourselves aside as we deal with the obligations of everyday life.
Traveling is a great way to learn more about your partner and to see how he or she handles different situations. Being together 24/7 can certainly take the mystery out of a relationship. In the end however, you’ll know exactly who you’re really dealing with, and vice-versa! So much so indeed that you might start thinking your partner knows you better than you know yourself!
Will it kill the magic? No. What it will kill are the illusions you might have had of each other.
But the magic of your memories, the experiences you shared, the discoveries you made, the challenges you faced together, the encounters, the passion… this magic will remain yours for a long, long time.
