The day you tell your boss that you’ll be leaving your job in less than four months, not to work for another company, but rather to pursue your wildest dreams, is a day when you’ll be overcome with mixed emotions. It’s heartbreaking to leave your stable life, not knowing what the future has in store for you. Saying no to a stable income, future, and career. Leaving for something vague, not knowing where it will take you. A constant battle between your heart and your mind.

Making such a decision requires an act of courage; it’s not an act of cowardice, as some might think. It’s a lot easier to maintain the status quo than it is to make life-changing decisions.  We study throughout our childhood years, working toward our ultimate goal of finding a good job, succeeding, making a good living and eventually starting a family. We attain our goals and then turn our back on them, choosing the unknown and the unexpected over security.

A lot of people would say that I must be crazy to make such a decision because it’s so utterly unreasonable. Perhaps they’re right, but we are the masters of our lives. The decisions we make dictate whether our lives will change or remain the same. Our fate is in our hands. We must choose what makes us happy and what we want to do with our lives.

All of the retired or elderly people I’ve spoken with were happy to hear that I’m making the most of my youth. They said they regretted not doing the same when they were young adventurers in search of excitement. Why do so many other people think that it’s foolish to pursue our dreams while we’re still young and healthy enough to do so? Will I return to Canada, having no job prospects, and live my life like I used to? Will I miss out on unique opportunities? Will I regret leaving to pursue my dreams? I strongly doubt it.
