Fashion & Beauty

If you plan to wear makeup in hot Summer weather, it’s important to use the right products with the right application method. And that’s exactly what I want to talk to you about today!

Everything is lighter in the summertime and that applies to both clothing and makeup. I don’t know about you, but I tend to wear less makeup in hot weather because (1) I have a clearer complexion; (2) it’s too hot to wear heavy makeup; and (3) my face adopts a naturally healthy glow. Here are the beauty products I recommend for the Summer months.

Mattifying powder

I hate how my oily skin gets even oilier in hot humid weather. I envy the people whose skin stays matte all day. Alas, I’m not one of them and I just have to accept it. I cheat, so to speak, by using products that help me control shine as much as possible. I like Rimmel’s mattifying powder; and for the price, it gets the job done. Unfortunately, I have to reapply it several times a day which means that I sometimes end up with cake-face. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Laura Mercier’s mattifying powder but I haven’t had the chance to try it yet. I think I’ll buy the travel size this Summer. I’ll let you know what I think of it!

Makeup setting spray

Having to touch up your makeup during the course of the day can be really annoying; sometimes you don’t have the time to do it and sometimes you simply can’t be bothered. Well, I have a solution for you: makeup setting spray. It’s like Spray Net for your face and it’s darn near magical. I often have long days; leaving home early in the morning and getting back late at night, and that doesn’t even include evenings spent dancing in the Summer heat! I always keep a bottle of setting spray in my makeup bag. I know I can rely upon it to keep my makeup intact and so it has become one of my beauty essentials.

Makeup primer (preferably mattifying!)

When Summer arrives, I opt for the mattifying version of my favourite beauty products. Whether that be a moisturizer, a primer, a tinted cream, a powder, or a bronzer, I buy them all in the mattifying version. A good face primer, in my opinion, will help your makeup go on better and hold on longer (or not). I like the Smashbox primer but lately I’ve been loving Lise Watier’s  because it’s easy to apply and keeps my makeup looking great.

Moisturizer with SPF

Adequate sun protection is always important, even in Winter, because the sun is “there” even if we don’t see it. And that applies tenfold in Summer. Sun protection plays a critical role in keeping your skin healthy and in slowing down the signs of ageing, especially for the face. Applying a tinted moisturizer with SPF is both simple and easy. Add a touch of bronzing powder, and you’re off to the races!

Waterproof mascara

I wear mascara most days of the week; even on hot and humid Summer days spent swimming in the pool. Waterproof mascara is ideal for those of us who don’t have the time or patience (or budget) for false lashes. Waterproof mascara can be somewhat difficult to remove but at least it stays on your lashes all day without running. Sometimes, you need to compromise!

Lip balm with SPF

As mentioned earlier, sun protection is doubly important in the Summer; not only for your face, but also for your lips and hair. Your lips are every bit as fragile as the rest of your skin. That’s why it’s important to keep your lips well moisturized with a lip balm, preferably one with SPF, and to reapply it as needed. Tinted lip balms, of which there are many, add a pretty touch of color while keeping your lips moisturized.

Light body moisturizer or body butter

You’re probably fed up at this point with me mentioning moisturizer! But it’s sooooo important. I don’t know about you, but I like applying a body moisturizer every day; it makes my skin soft to the touch and adds a subtle scent. I recently discovered the Sparkling Pomegranate body butter from Fruits et Passion, and I LOVE IT! Body butter is very moisturizing while being less oily than a regular cream. My new fave keeps my skin well hydrated for a solid 24 hours (seriously)!

Hair oil

Seems like everybody is talking about Moroccanoil’s famous hair oil, and with good reason. It’s subtly scented and keeps hair looking healthy with added softness and shine. I love how it adds the look of highlights to my blond hair when I’m under the sun.

Gentle face and body exfoliator

It goes without saying that more of our skin is exposed during the hot Summer months, as compared to the cold Winter months, and that includes both our legs and underarms. I use Lush sugar scrub on my legs (almost daily) to keep them soft and smooth. Not only does it feel good, it also fights the appearance of cellulite (and that’s no hocus pocus!). You’ll obtain a closer shave if you exfoliate them first and they’ll stay smoother for a longer period of time. Exfoliating your legs is great but don’t stop there! Your face is exposed to the pollution in the air, especially in Summer, so it’s doubly important to exfoliate it, but don’t overdo it… once a week should be sufficient!
