Gossip Girl will be celebrating its 10th year in September. More specifically, Gossip Girl’s debut show was first aired on September 19, 2007. I am absolutely convinced that every girl in my age group at the time (the 15 to 17 year olds) watched the show at one point or another. Emotions ran high on the series; there were lots of fights, designer clothing and handbags, and gorgeous guys, thank you very much!
I was surfing Netflix about a year ago hoping to the find a new television series to watch but nothing really grabbed my attention. So, I headed over to Club Illico (yup, another well invested $10) and discovered that the entire Gossip Girl series was available! I hesitated a moment, asking myself why I’d want to rewatch an entire television series when I already knew how it would all end in the series finale. A few seconds later… I was 16 again, eyes glued to my television screen.
Gossip Girl definitely influenced my adolescent years. I absolutely loved that show! To be perfectly honest, Gossip Girl will likely remain my favourite television series of all time. Just in case you’re not familiar with the show (if that’s even possible!)…
1- Leighton Meester (Blair Waldorf) originally auditioned for the role of Serena Van Der Woodsen but admitted to the producers that she felt more comfortable playing the role of Blair.
2 – Blake Lively (Serena Van Der Woodsen) knew that accepting this role would put an end to her anonymity. Lively was very shy in her early days as an actress but she confessed that playing the role of Blake was very exciting.
3- Ed Westwick (Chuck Bass) auditioned for the role of Nate Archibald but in the end the role was given to Chace Chawford.
4- Before shooting even began, Leighton Meester agreed to trade in her naturally blond hair in order to become a brunette because the sole character with blonde hair would be played by Blake Lively.
5- The television series was so popular by Season 2 that several well-known fashion designers offered their creations to the producers, asking only that Leighton Meester and Blake Lively wear them during shootings of the show.
Ten years ago, I dreamed of having the same flamboyant lifestyle as Blake and Leighton. Unfortunately, being a rather ordinary girl from an equally ordinary family, I wasn’t chauffeured to school in a limousine. I didn’t have a coordinating Chanel handbag for each of my outfits, let alone Louboutin’s on the floor of my “fairly basic” wardrobe.
Gossip Girl made more than one teenage girl dream. We became attached to the beautiful characters, the city of New York and the fashion style of S and B. Even now, I still talk about this influential series.
Which clan were you with “Serena” or “Blair”?
XOXO, Gossip Girl
